LAWN TENNIS
WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL MEETING
Matters relating to the oontrol and conduct of local tennis wers dealt with at the annual meeting of the Wellington. Provincial Lawn Tennis Association held last evening. Mr. M. E. Deimiston, vice-president, occupied the chair, in the unavoidable absence of the> president, Mr. H. M. Gore. There was a large attendance of delegates. Applications for affiliation -were received from the Trinity (Wellington South) and Maryborough Clubs, and granted. In moving the adoption of the report and' balance-sheet, the /features of which have been published, tho Chairman, touched on various matters of importance. The grounds question was a very difficult one, but he believed that by persistent agitation the City Council would eventually give the association several courts. If the- City Council realised the- extent of club membership, tho association, he thought, would be given ■more grounds. It was a pity that the inter-cmb matches had been dropped, but it was possible that this year one or two Saturdays would be set aside during the season for such matches, and so revive interest. Two events that would create added interest in tennis generally throughout the Dominion wer© the visit of a New South Wales team, and the playing of the Davis Cup match at Auckland. The Now South Wales team would arrive in New Zealand on the 21st December, and when the allocation of matches was being considered by the New Zealand Association, Wellington, he was sure, would not be overlooked. It was regretted that Jack of grounds in. Wellington prevented the local association from making a claim for the Davis Cup match to be played in Wellington, but further efforts should be made in the direction of obtaining a suitable i ground for the Davis Cup contest four years hence. In conclusion, the Chairman urged that all associated with tennis should do all that was possible to make it the principal summer sport in Wellington. He believed that there were as many tennis players as cricketers.
Mr. D. M. Kean seconded the motion, and stated that since the report had been published the Director of Reserves had been approached in the matter of grounds for tennis, and there was a possibility that a portion of a, city reserve at Kilbirnie would be set aside for club matches. The ground would be somewhat rough for tennis \ this season, btit it was^ eatisfactory to secure such a ground. After a brief discussion, during which it was mentioned that the Kilbirnie ground would provide 12 courts, the motion was carried.
