HUTT COUNTY AFFAIRS
The monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held to-day, Councillor F. G. Cooper being in the chair. A letter was received from Mr. A. T. Clarke, offering a gift of 14 acres of land at Paekakariki to the council, to be held in trust for the benefit of the residents of Paekakariki, with the provision that in the event of Paekakariki seceding from >the county the land should be rotained by the Paekakariki authorities. No objection was raised to the council erecting a workman's cottage on a portion of the land. It was decided that the chairman should inspect the property, with power to act.
The tender of Mr. F. T. Howell was accepted for work in connection with the widening of a portion of the AkatarawaWaikanae road near the saddle. The tender was £701. A contribution of £250 towards the cost- of the work was being made by Messrs. C. and A. Od'lin and Co., and a £ for £ subsidy on the council's estimated cost of improving the road was being provided by the Government.
The inspector of works, Mr. J. W. Cudby, reported that the motor-lorry had not been working satisfactorily. A small portion of the Hutt-Waikanae road in Rukiorangi had been metalled, «ld other roads in the county had received attention. A bridge of 14ft span in Stokes Valley needed renewing, and the, inspector recommended ' that the piers and wings be built with concrete. The report was adopted.
The Eastbourne Borough Council was granted the loan of the road-grader. =.
