Messrs. T. W. Hislop and C. A. Cathie were yesterday elected members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

The Rev. H. Van Staveren is making a good recovery from a severe attack of bronchitis. He is still confined to bed, but hopes to be able to get about again in a short time.

Mr. John Lodge, who for the past twenty-four years had been an officer of the Prisons Department, 1 died last week. He leaves a widow and three sons • and two daughters. ■

The death has occurred! at the Waikato Hospital of Mr.- Walter Bond Young, aged seventy-three. He was for thirty years a member of the police force, retiring seven years ago.—Press Association.

Mr. F. W. Furkert, Engineer-in-Chief and Under-Secretary for Public Works, who had one of his feet badly crushed when the Hinemoa- was berthing at Auckland recently, is now making good progress towards recovery at his home in Hataitai.

The death occurred at the Wellington Hospital on Sunday of Mr. J. P. Key, librarian to the Wellington Working Men's Club and Literary Institute. The deceased, who was 69 years of age, had been in good health until two weeks ago, His kindly disposition and courteous manner gained for him. a -wide cifole of friends, and as a prominent billiard player he was very well known.' The late Mr. Key served for 21 years in the New Zealand Permanent Forces.

Mr. G. E. Cooger. a Maori War veteran, died at his residence at Mount Eden last week in his 85th year. • He participated in the Victorian and Otago gold rushes, and in 1863 during the Maori War he joined the 2nd Regiment Waikato Militia, ; taking part in various engagements, including, the Battle of Orakau. Later he'joined Yon Tempsky and served under him against' the Maoris. He- also helped to quell the Te Kooti rebellion. For eighteen years afterwards he held the position of janitor at the Auckland Museum, retiring some ten years ago. He is survived by a widow and grown-up family.
