ENTRY INTO VILNA

LITHUANIA A-SUBJECT, NATION.

(PV»USBI» IN TUB TIMM.I

(Received October 11, 1.30 p.m.)

LONDON, 10th October. A Times correspondent at Kovno reports that serious apprehension has been caused by the news that the Poles have entered Vilna. Notwithstanding the official assurances, the Suwalki Conference, and the intervention of the League of Nations, tho Poles are making Lithuania a subject nation. The .correspondent states that after declaring that the Polish armies were ignoring the armistice, the British military attache, Major Pargiter, motored to headquarters, and the Poles detained him until nightfall, lest lie should betray their military movements. They told him, they were repeating D'Annunzio's trick and wore crossing the Niemen without the Government's authority, as an. independent army to occupy Vilna in spite of the League of Nations. It is understood that the British have urged the Lithuanian Government to remain in Viina at all costs, leaving the issue to the League of Nations. Most of tho Government departments, however, had already fled to Kovno. The French Military Mission has assumed the governorship of Vilna. The Lithuanian Army gave the Poles a final fight a. fow miles from Vilna,. temporarily. repulsing tnem and inflicting severe casualties. Tho Lithuanian troops then retired. Tho residents of Vilna are terror-stricken and are fleeing westward.
