Their Excellencies the Govemor-G-en-ei-a-1 and Viscountess Jellicoe, with their staff, will attend the ladies' night of the Wellington Savage Club on Friday at the Town Hall.

Nearly all the societies affiliated to the Women's National Council 1 were represented at the meeting held last night. Miss Coad, M.A., presided. Arrangements were completed with regard to the next open meeting, when Mr. Tipling will givo an address on "Co-oper-ative Buying," an event which is Being looked forward to with great interest. Mrs. Coleridge brought forward a report from a sub-committee regarding municipal elections, which was approved and adopted. It wa-s reported that the civic group had increased greatly in membership, and was likely to be one of the most active and successful groups affiliated to the council. The present difficult situation in the country with regard to the obtaining necessaries of life was the subject of a long a,nd earnest discussion. Two resolutions were drawn up to be forwarded to employers and various unions. Leave of absence was granted to Miss Jenkyns on account of ill health, with expressions of regret for the cause.

The Sisters of Mercy are having a garden party in the Convent grounds, Dufferin-street, to-morrow afternoon. Great quantities of home-made cakes and «weets are promised, and numerous attractions in the shape of fancy, flower, and fern stalls, aa well as a well-stocked fishpond, will be provided. This is the first, appeal of the Sisters of Dufferin•street Convent, so they hope for generous response to their efforts for the Orphanage fund.

A very pleasant afternoon party was given at the Cabaret yesterday by Mr. Trezise, wTien some members of the Government House staff were present. Lady Stout and other members of the committee were there, and many of Wellington's best and most enthusiastic dancers.

A well-arranged and successful reception given by the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Navy Leiague, in honour of Her Excellency Viscountess Jellicoe, took, place at the Kelburn Kiosk this afternoon. Wellington and. its harbour looks its best in weather like the present, and Kelburn is an ideal place under the circumstances*

Mrs. Ho'sking presided at a meeting of the Navy League Ladies' Auxiliary yesterday afternoon. The appointment of officers of the auxiliary for the coming year was dealt with. It was unanimously agreed that Viscountess Jellicoe be asked to accept the position of patroness of the auxiliary. Mrs. J P. Liike (Mayoress) was elected hon president, and Mrs. C. Earle and Mrs. Tripp vice-presidents. Mrs. J. Darling was reelected hon. secretary, and Mrs. C. Richardson hon. treasurer. The following motion was passed : "That it be a recommendation from the Auxiliary Committee to the Navy League Executive that the woolgrowers be approached with regard to allocating a portion of their surplus wool profits to building and equipping a hostels for sailors in the port of Wellington. A letter was read from the Masterton branch of the auxiliary aslung if it could use its funds in hand for educational propaganda, or was it necessary to start a separate fund for this work. It was decided to inform the branch that it was not necessary to start another fund. Mrs. C. Eurle reported that the dance held the previous night had been very successful, a.nd good-financial results might be expected. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs. Earle, Mrs. Bayfield, and assistants for their hard work in connection with the dance.

Mr. James Eearce, J.P., an ea-rly settler of Pahautanui, but now of Lower Hutt, received numerous good wishes on attaining his eightieth birthday, on the 4tb inst., and in the evening a number of his family and friends assembled at his residence to wish him and Mrs Pearce still further health and happiness.

The annual meeting of the Eel-burn Croquet Club will be held on Fridaynext, at 2.30 p.m. at the pavilion. Matters of much importance will be discussed, and members are urged to attend. Details will be found in an advertisement in this issue.

The annual re-examination of the Wellington Nursing Division, St. J.A.8.0., took place in the Y."W.C.A. Booms, Dr. S. Harcourt Arthur being the examiner. All those who entered passed for their efficiency, and the doctor expressed himeelf as pleased witb their work and uniform. Dr. Arthur received a heartyvote of thanks for his kindness in connection with the division at all times.

The annual sale of work in connection with St. Mark's Church will tatee place or Thursday and Friday next. Great preparations have been, made by the ladies of the palish, and the various stalls will be well supplied with needlework, fancy goods, produce, flowers, sw-eets, etc No efforts have been spared to ensure success. The sale will be opened on Thursday, at 3 p.m., by Her Excellency Lady Jellicoe. During the afternoon musical items will be given by Mr. Turner's Orchestra, and afternoon tea will bo provided; in the evening, a full musical programme will be given by Miss Oastir's Concert Party.

Oaptain and Mrs. W. J. Grey, oi Kelburn, who have been on a visit to their son, Captain J. E Grey, at Tahiti, returned by the Marama yesterday.

Miss Queenie S.. G. Tipling, who is leaving shortly for Samoa, where lipx marriage to Mr. Arthur G. Phillips, accountant, Crown Administration Office, Apia, will take place, was recently presented with a Doulton salad bowl and silver cake dish by members of the Public Health Department, with whom she has been associated. Dr. Valintine made the presentation, and expressed the good wishes of all,'

A pleasant and interesting ceremony is noted by The Post's London correspondent as follows:— At the High. Commissioner's office recently a farewell presentation of jewellery is to be made by Sir Peter M'Bride (Agent-General for Victoria) to Lady Mackenzie and her daughter, Mrs. A. V. M'Dpnald, a? a tribute in recognition of their stay in England and of their devoted and continuous work during the war. Lady Mackenzie is to receive a beautiful gold necklet with an emerald pendant and brooch, and Mrs. M'Donald is being given a splendid diamond-cluster ring and brooch. Those present at the little ceremony will be the donors, who were : Lord Blyth, Sir Newton J. Moore, Sir George H. Perley, Lieut.-Co!. Sir T. B. Robinson, the Bight Hon. Andrew Fieher, Sir Peter M'Bride, Sir K. Nivison, Sir Arthur Pearson, Sir James Mills, the Hon. Arthur M. Myers. Sir J. Duncan Elliot, Sir Thomas W. Parkinson, Sir Westby B. Perceval, Mr. W. Acton Adams, Mr. Moss Da.vis, Mr. Peter Dewar, Mr. H. L. Hayman, Mr. Wolf Harris, Mr. W. Lovell, Mr. R. D. D. M'Lean, Mr. A Michie. Mr. H. L. Risoley, Mr. P. R. Sargood, Mr. A. Willis, Mr. W. V/eddel. A handsome donation was received from the British Empire League, and <i small amount which the committee had in hand from the banquet given to Sir Thomas Mackenzie at the Mansion House, was added to the total.
