CEMENT SHORTAGE

Inability to get cement has, from time to time stopped, and has generally hin-' dorcd. the constniction of the septic lank'for the Mosterton Borough drainage system. At the last meeting of the Borou!,'h Council.the. shortage"was dis/. cussed, and some -of -the members re--imirked th-.t orivate holders were able to get cement .from dealers without applying to the Board of Trade.

Councillor Henderson said that another tnwn not far/.'from'.Masterton. received all the cement.it. lieeded'for' bproagh,works. This town received- its cement'as a-re-sult of applications to the Board of, Trade direct; and it'had been'suggested that that body had got: annoyed with the Masterton.Council because it had applied to the Prime Minister. The Mayor, in reply, said the engineer had sent dozens of letters to the board' tirior to writing to the Prime. Minister.. The Mayor also said that builders of banks and other structures at present being erected were using cement not obtained locally, and therefore the distribution was not within the control of the council.

Councillor Watson asked why the' council could not get cement when: plenty was available for the erection of buildings for private firms. : On the motion, of Councillor Henderson it was resolved to notify Mr. G. R. Sykes, M.P., that the council urgently required cement, but could not get it though private firms could.
