NEWSPAPER CRITICISMS
(AUSTRALIAN - NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received October 6, 10 a.m.) LONDON, sth October. The newspapers are sharply criticising Mr. Asquith's proposals. They describe Mr. Asquith's suggestion that Ireland should be conceded the status of an autonomous Dominion in the fullest and widest sense, including the right to a separate army and navy, and fiscal independence, as a complete surrender to the Simi Fein. Mr. Asquith'a answer is: "I am not alarmed by the spectre of an Irish Republic. M* do not fight for phrases, but for realities." The Westminster Gazette says it prefers Viscount Grey's plan for a time limit within which Irishmen shall be called upon, to settle their own problem, rather than the Asquith suggestion that • Ireland should have equal rights with the Dominions regarding external relations.
