THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Sir Lancelot.")

Acceptances for the first day's handicap events at the Masterton Racing Club's Meeting, to bo held on 14th instant, close on Friday, at 9 p.m., with Mr. A. Hathaway (secretary).

In connection with fchs Annual Meeting of tho Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club, to be held on the 31st instant, owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for all events close with Mr. J. B. Bairstow (secretary), Carteitoc, on Friday, at 9 p.m.

The death, occurred in Wellington recently of Mr. R-obei't Hanson, father of the well-known horsemen, Arthur, Roy,

.Eric, and Lett. Manson. The funeral, which took place at Ka.rori yesterday, was largely attended. .

The A.j.O. Breeders' Plats winner, Vaccine, was bred in Queensland, and is the first horse bred in that State to win tba Tace. Vaccine belongs to the second batch of the progeny of Seremond, a Desmond horse, purchased by Mr. O. E. M'Dougall, the well-known Queensland breeder, to take the place of Syce. Vaccine is a half-brother to the successful inter-State performer, Molly's Robe.

Saturday last was the first occasion that the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes, a two-year-old curtain-raiser in Victoria, had to be run in divisions, owing to the size of the field. The race proved a good advertisement for the imported horse Shepherd King, whose progeny won one event and ran second in the other. Shepherd King is a son of Martagon, and among other events won the Caulfield Cup, and ran second to Sasanof in the Melbourne Cup, for Messrs. J. Widdis and j. Mills. Shepherd King did stud duty in Victoria before being purchased at auction for 3500 guineas by Mr. E. G Blume, who will probably get the money back with him that he lost over St. Savin, another expensive purchase. Messrs. Mills and Widdis also own the Shepherd King youngsters. Salitas, winner of the First Division, is owned by Mr. J. Mills and is from Traquette, who won tli6 Maribyrnong Plate a. few seasons back. Shepherd King, who races in Mr. A. Widdis's colours, and ran second in the Second Division, is from Lady Felicia.

For the first time, on Monday last, the distance of the A.J.C. Metropolitan was a mile and five furlongs. The form of Pershore in the Spring Stakes on the previous Saturday, when he finished three lengths behind'the dead-heaters, proved a good try-out. In that event he carried 9.0, whereas in the Metropolitan he only had 7.6. Perehore was bred by his owner, Mr. E. J. Watt, who must have done well during the time he has been racing on tho other side. The Metropolitan winner is by All Black, from Perseis, a New South Wales-bred mare by Positano—Circe, by Castor—Cissy, by Musket-^-Frailty, a great winner-pro-ducing family. A full-brother to Pershore (a, first foal) died. She also produced a full-brother to the Metropolitan winner, now two-years old. Persic (by Athenic) is a half-sister.

Bonnie Maid is doing useful work at headquarters, and will likely make her reappearance in the Masterton Cup. J Ayres will probably also take up Dainty Step, Astinome, Happy Days, and Silk Rein.

From the appended list it will ba seen that the six yearlings purchased at auction by Messrs. Riddiford Bros, last season cost 3625 guineas—an average of slightly over 600 guineas each. The writer hopes to see the Messrs. Riddiford land some of the big stakes as a reward for their enterprise in buying the best: Gs.
