ANSWERS IN BRIEF.
The following information in reply to rr.embers' questions was given in the House of Representatives last night: — Temporary appointments to the Defence Ordnance Staff aire necessary until the permanent establishment of the branch is fixed following a decision on Defence policy. When permanent appointments axe finally made selection will be according to qualifications. Negotiations are in progress with a sawmilling company on the west coast of the South Island to supply the Housing Department with the output of their mill. The Department does not consider it necessary to erect a Government sawmill.
The contract for the conveyance of mails between New Zealand arid San Francisco expires about June next. The 'Contractors are required to give New Zealand shippers first refusal of all space for freights in the vessels used under the contract. There is no provision in the contract for reserving space for exporters shipping goods from Barotonga to San Francisco. The question of making such provision in any new contract entered into will receive consideration.
If compensation :'s given to gold-pro-ducecs for following the embargo on gold export it would inevitably lead to demands from other producers for similar treatment.
The question of fostering the tobacco industry in New Zealand is being looked into.
Steps have been taken to obtain a report by cable on New Zealand frozen meat in the United Kingdom.
