IN A LAUNDRY

The usual round of laundry work and daily meals at ■ Sing Lee's laundry in Molesworth-street was seriously interfered with on 24th August,, when a young man named Andrew B. B. Somerville dropped in about tea time and behaved in such a manner that the police were sent for, though be was not arrested until 28tn August. This morning, when the man was brought before Mr. J. S. Evans, S.M., at tho Magistrate's Court, Sing Lee, who is an old man, said that Somerville had demanded a portion of the rice, which he was given, and then a loan of 10s, which he was refused. lie then threatened witness with a bottle, whoreupon Sing Leo deemed it very expedient to go for the police. - While he was away an assistant saw Hie man roach over to the till and remove the contents, about 355. At about 11 o'clock the same night Somerville returned to the laundry and threatened witness with a bottlo, and also with a table knife. The man searched tho house, for money, Siug Lee believed, and then loft the house. Somerville, for whom Mr. W. Perry appeared, denied that lie had assaulted or threatened to assault the wld man, fir that he had stolen the money, but he admitted that he had twice gone to tha place to search for his wife, whom he lind soon entering tho laundry. The Magistrate said that the evidence for the prosecution was net conclusive, «nd lie would give the defendant the benefit of the doubt a.nd dismiss the charges of theft and assault.
