LOWER HUTT GAS PRESSURE
Speaking in reference to a. statement made at the last meeting of the Hutt Council, "that the Petone gasworks" manager had alleged that the Hutt sas mains were faulty," meaning thereby that they were "leaky''-the Mayor of Potone (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) stated that in justice to Mr. gasworks • manager, it should be explained that in speaking of the Hutt's reticulation as "faulty" he had m mind reports obtained by that council from Mesfsrs. Dougall and Ford, which described the reticulation as being in many respects unsatisfactory. : ."For instance, Mr.. Dougall states that when the consumption, reaches 6000 cubio feet \ per hour, a 12-inch main would be required at the Hutt Bridge. In the f'Jpißga the consumption now exceeds 6000.0.f. per hour. Mr. Ford, in a fullydetailed report, states, 'that 69.43 per cent, ot the mains are of the small sizes of om and. IJin. Such large proportions of small mains are always unsatisfactory.s Speakmg of the 700 yards of l£in pipes in Western Hutt, ho' states that the gas supPly to the residents of that locality must be unsatisfactory It ia not necessary to comment upon these statements of experts as to-the.'state of the Hutt's reticulation. It is sufficient to say that they exonerate our gasworks manager, Mr. Appleyard, from the charge of making 'wild statements.' "
