A CITY TENDER
A protest against the acceptance by the Milk Committee of the City Coun, cil of a tender for refrigerating plant manufactured abroad in preference to New Zealand-made machinery at 'a' cheaper price, was lodged by la deputation from the Wellington Industrial Association which waited, upon the com-' mittea yesterday. The deputation ex-' pressed some doubt as to whether Messrs. John Chambers and Son. who had secured the tender, had complied with the specifications. At the same ■ time a strong plea was made for the support and encouragement of local industry. The Chairman of tho. ' committee (Councillor Norwood), in reply, stated that any firm was entitled to offer tenders for a standard machine. Messrs. Chambers and Son complied with all the conditions required Theirs had the advantage of. being for a "Duplex" machine, which meant one-half of the machine could be run while tho other half was undergoing repairs. In consideration of this difference in the machines tendered for. the accepted offer was in reality the cheaOer one. He congratulated the Industrial Association upon so closely watching the interests of tho New Zealand . manufacturer. It showed that the association was of real value to the ' community. The committee hud accepted the tender for tho machine which it considered would be of best value to the council. The committee was alive first of all to the intwests of the milk department, on which there must bo no capital expenditure that was not warranted. They were, nevertheless,, entirely in sympathy with the obi'ects nf the deputation. j " __ :
