LOCAL DISTRICT CONFERENCE
At the conclusion of the Dominion Conference of the W.EiA; yesterday afternoon a Wellington District Conference was held, Mr. 0. R. 0. Robifisoti .'presiding. Professor Murphy (Victoria College) delivered an^addreas on "The-PotentiaK-ties of th* Wellington branch of the W.E.A." He stressed the significance and value of its activities from the social, point ot' view. Speaking from five years' experience as a W.KA. tutor, he stated that while in the' economic classes all shades, of opinion Were represented and individual pbints keeiily argued; he had neve* known an instance where the m'eii of the classes \had lost their temper, df their respect for the opinions of their opponents. T.he continuous cbmglexity. of modern social and economic organisation, he submitted, made it more iieces sary that the people at large, should fiilly understand the. manner of government and of the economic system in which they wer« livingMr. D. J. B. Seymour reviewed the development of the work which made necessary the establishment of a fully representative provisional constitution. Professor T. A* Hunter explained the constitution necessary. A discussion followed upon a proposal that the basis of membership of .the W E.A. should be members of tutorial classes. Messrs. Roes (Palmerston North') and M'AlistSr (Levin) strongly supported this view, but finally-it'was decided to abide by the present organisation. ' . ■ Mr. H. D. Acland (Christchurch) was elected Dominion president. The rest of the Dominion executive will be appbinted by the four, districts as soon as they are properly constituted.
