PORT CHARGES
INCREASES ANNOUNCED.
When the Harbour Board came out of committee at a late hour last night, the Chairman (Mr. J. G. Harkness) made an important, announcement on the subject of port charges. It had, lie said, become necessary for the board to provide additional revenue. The,,.trade 1 of the port had remained _ tho same since 1914, but the cost of administration had increased owing to tho men's .wages going up 60 per cent. A new schedule of charges had, therefore, been drawn up as under.: — Inward wharfage and labour, etc., and general cargo,' present rate, 5s per ton, increase Is per ton.
Transhipment, wharfage, labour, and storage, present rate 3s 6cl per ton, increase Is por ton. '!l I ! ■■.-.■ Wool and skins, present" rato 9d per bale, increase 3d per bale. ■ Hemp and tow, present rate 6d per bale, increase 3d per bale. ; . Outward wharfage and labour and Mineral cargo . present rats Is •6d per ton, increase 6fl 'pei\ ton. Harbour improvement rate: General cargo, present rato Is per ton, increase 6d per ton; coal, Id per.ton, increase Id per ton. • ■■ | _ Berthagc rate, present rate id per ton, increase id pcr 1 ton. Port charges, present late 2d per ton, increase Id per ton.
The new scalo will come into operation on Ist October.
