WESTERN DISTRICT TRAMWAY
I . . ■■ TO THI EBiTOS. Sir,—ln your issue of the-' 25th instant appeared, a letter signed by Mr. Aston, suggesting a proposed route for a tramway into the western district. I wan much interested, in the proposal,, and candidly admit that there.'was merit in the nuggestion, and, on going carefully through the whole position and comparing it with the council's route, I admit that it saves only twelve chains in distance, although the, grade is even better than the one now before the ratepayers, but the cost for resumptions, compensations, aird tannels would be enormous as compared with the route, so, from a financial point of view, it is not as good as the one which the council suggests. If Mr. Astoh's proposal - was brought into effect, it would not give the relief so continually-.asked for by the western districts; besides failing to open up new building- areas which the Earoa-roadi proposal does " Over and above, this it will riot relieve the request from the, Wellington South residents for a shorter and quicker route to Karori from that part •of the town. Therefore, •in conclusion, I give credit, where credit is due, but must consider the main requests which, unfortunately, Mr. Aston's valuable .suggestion has overlooked, bo can safely say that, considering the high cost, the little saving in time, we must again support the council's, proposal as still the best proposition.—l am, etc., LEONARD M'KENZIE. Chairman Outlying Districts Committee. 26th August. _■;■•■ .
