CARRYING THE MAILS
Letter carriers walk or cycle on their rounds, but they use the trams to a great extent to reach their destination.areas. To-day they were carried in the Postal Department's motor lorries and mail vans, which were to be seen at an early hour this morning carrying the men to the various suburbs. The Department has had similar situations to cope with when the trams have stopped'previously, and its 'substitute machinery is always ready for use. Indeed, the post office, having a considerable fleet of motor vehicles, is most fortunately situated. Other businesses and individuals to-day ransacked lumber rooms for bicycles and other forms of conveyance, which went back almost to the boneshaker period.
