HUNGER STRIKERS
GOVERNMENT REFUSES RELEASE
PRISON DOCTORS THREATENED,
(Received August 24, 10 a.m.) LONDON, 22nd August. Thirty Sinn Fein hunger-strikers in Cork Gaol are in a weak condition, but the Government refuses to release them. Two of the prison doctors have received an unsigned letter from the "Commander of the Cork Brigade of the Irish Republican Army." threatening them- with death if any hunger-striker dies, but pointing out that they can evade responsibility by immediately resigning. ' LONDON, 22nd August. Archbishop Mannix and Bishop Foley have arranged to visit the Lord Mayor of Cork in Brixton prison. The clergy have advised M'Swiney to desist from his hunger-strike. Ho refused, declaring that he was prepared to die cheerfully.
M'Swiney is too weak for forcible feeding. The Homo Office is determined not to release him. The Irish Labour Party declares that his death may lead to an uprising which only wholesale slaughter will suppress.
