The 'Right Hon. W. F." Massey has telegraphed to Mr. P. E. Cheal, president of the Railways League, agreeing to receive a deputation of delegates from Auckland, Hawkes Bay, and Taranaki on Monday, 6th September, at Wellington. The deputation has most important to bring before the Prime Minister, namely,- the allocation of future loans on an equitable basis as between the North and South Islands.
The port of Wellington is very busy to-day, and when a call for labour was madei ati 8 o'clock this,, morning all the. men available were engaged.
A witness at the Magistrate's Court in Auckland last week said he was on a Crown^leasehold in the North, and he had to go out working to keep, the farm,as it seemed more cement than soil. This was in answer to a question, as to how much he could allow his wife for maintenance. The counsel in the case finally agreed that he should allow his wife £16 to allow her to stay in town a couple of months to recuperate her health. He agreed with a sigh, remarking, "There goes the money I intended- for seed oats."
The birth rate in Australia has suddenly begun to show an appreciable increase, judging by the growing number of applications for the maternity allowance which are being received by tho Commonwealth Treasury. The number of bonuses that were paid in July totalled 14,361, compared with 11,595 for the corresponding month of 1919. Parents of infants ill New South Wales drew, among them. 6250 bonuses, while the allowances paid'out in. Victoria, for the month numbered 3860.
Mr. Fraser Gange, tho well-known singer, and Miss' Amy Evans, the eminent soprano, who have arrived in Wellington, are to be given a reception in the Caledonian Hall to-morrow
