CHESS

NGAIO v, WELLINGTON SOUTH

The first of this year's "home and homo" matches between the Ngaio and Wellington South Cliess Clubs was played at the Newtown Public Library on Saturday evening, -vhen there was a good attendance,-despite, the bad weather and the prevalence of sickness. After a cordial welcome had been extended to the visitors by Mr. -W. Berry (president of the South Wellington Club!, the pairing for the twelve boards ■was announced, and "hostilities" were commenced at 7.45 p.m. At the adjournment for refreshments each side had scored two games. When play ceased at 11 p.m. Ngaio had scored sixpoints [G. A. Jones i, Brooker 1. E E: Hicks 1, W. J. Hicks £. J. A. Glasgow 1. Stevens 1, and Hanger 1), and Wellington South five:points (G. P. Anderson 4, A. Clark 1, G. Greig 1, Ashby 1, uyles, son., £„F. Curtis 1). The.result of thel'match therefore depends on the incomplete game at the top board where A. W. Gyles (W.S.) has Queen and six pawns, and H. L. James (Ngaio) lias a Quten and five pawns. Xgaio will bo victorious if James can. draw this game. On the other hand, a win for Gyles v.oiild make the result a tie (six all). The finish of tills "game is consequently awaited with muoh interest in local chess circles.
