THE PITT-RIVERS MUSEUM

NEW ZEALAND SPECIMENS AT

OXFORD.

LONDON, 28th May.

The Curator of the Pitt-Rivers Museum at Oxford mentions that the year 1919 was largely taken up with the organisation of old material, but ho says there was a very largo influx of new specimens, and new exhibition cases were erected in the court to accommodate some of these. Additions to the Museum include: —

A very fine ko, or Maori wooden spade, New Zealand; presented by Louis jC. G. Clarke, M.A. _ ' Pobblo for crushing hematite, kokotai, used as pigment, Maori; presented by S. G. Hewlett, M.A. Blade of tatooing instrument, perforated pin (needle or oar pendant) of sperm whale ivory, bone spatula for detaching pawa shells from the rocks, 96 points of fish-hooks, part of large bone fish-hook, four fragments of worked bone, boar's tusk etc., Maori; presented by J. Reid Moir.

Part of human calynria and lower mandible, tooth, two obsidian flakes, and piece of slate ground at the edges, from ancient Maori kitchonmidclon, Hokianga R., and six groundstono adze blades, found in Hokianga district, north end of North Island, largo basalt adze blade from oW Maori workshop, Farewell Sandpit, north end of South Island, two rare Maori fishhooks, New Zealand; 'presented by Mrs. A. N. Leeds.

Ca.rved model of a canoe prow, New Zealand, given by Mrs. W. J. Solas. Two Maori groundstono adze blades, Now Zealand, given by Mrs. E. A. Hone.

Three stone adze blades, New Zealand, and greenstone axo blade. S.E. Now Guinea, (said to bo Taurus Island), given by. Oscar Raphael, F.S.A.
