AN IMPORTANT PHASE

OPINION OF THE TIMES "A CASE FOE SPECIAL TEEATMENT." (UNITED MESS ASSOCIATION.—COPir.I3HT.) (A»9TB.ILIAK.NETT ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.} LONDON, 26th July. Mr, Lloyd George's Irish pronouncement is much discussed in political .circles. ft is generally felt that the position cannot rema>in stationary. Important developments are presaged. The Times points out that Mr. Lloyd George will be unable to maintain his present attitude indefinitely. The Irish question moves on relentlessly. The Sinn Fein republic is now a de' facto Government; and Ulster has commenced the opening skirmishes of a religious war. The days for temporising are numbered. The Times thinks that the South of Ireland would ultimately ac--capt a full measure of Dominion Home Rule, but this would spell disaster to Ulster. It opposes "naked partition," but thinks the case calls for special treatment, In view of the growing embittermont, prompt statesmanship must end the present intolerable situation.
