WIRELESS TELEPHONY

SUCCESSFUL TEST AT SEA WELCOME TO EMPIBE PRESSMEN. CBNIIID PhESb ASSOCIATION.-COPTMOHT.) (AUSTCALIAN - NEST KEAIutKO CAM.B ASSOCIATION.^ (Received Julr 27, 10 a.m.) < ST. JOHNS (Newfoundland). On Sunday the Premier of Newfoundland' (Mr. R; Squires), the High Commissioner, (Sir E. R. Bowling), and a distinguished company, took part in a ■wireless telephone welcome to the visit--ing Imperial journalists on board the Victorian, which was 650 miles east of St. Johns. The test started aboard with a gramophone selection, which was heard plainly. Viscount Burnham spoke to Mr. Squires; and the Postmaster-Gen-eral (Mr. J. A. R-obinson) extended Newfoundland's official "welcome to the Press Conference. : Sir Patrick M'Grath (President of the legislative Council) spoke to "Sir Roderick Jones. During the test everybody at the wireless station used the instruments. The demonstration was concluded by the sending of a' message to the press of Canada by Colonel Parkinson, of the Ottawa Journal, who was on the steamer to represent the Canadian newspapers. He dictated to Sir Patrick M'Grath as follows :

"It is peculiarly fitting that the initial outstanding demonstration of the ■wireless telephone as a medium for communication between water and land should have been operated on the Victorian, which is carrying to Canada the Imperial press organisation which is so vitally interested in promoting greater facilities .for the free exchange of the nswa and views of the widely remote Dominions of the British Empire- With a keen sense of pride as the official re-_ presentative of the Canadian newspapers, I desire to avail myself of the first opportunity accorded of communicating a message by wireless telephone from a ship at sea to the press of Canada; and a&o to pay a. tribute to the eminently satisfactory working results of this practical test of the newest achievement of the - distinguished Marconi. The accomplishment is great in its potentiality for prosecuting the common interests of the British Empire."
