PETONE COUNCIL
The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Counoil was held last evening. Present: Mr. J. W. M'Ewen (Mpj r), and Councillors C. P. Brockelbank, J. L. Churohouse, J. Kyle, W. Hay, A. Anderson, D. S. Bedingfield, G. Coot, and E. Tovey.
Requests from tho District High Sohool in connection with additional' safeguards for the ohildrer. from street traflio df.ngers were referred back to the committee for referonco to the Education Board.
The Prime Minister and Minister for Justice promised coii>;idcra::un to tlm council's requests for increasing pound sustenance locs, and a reduction in the amount charged for clerical services in connection with tho Licensing Committee. The Minister of Public Health advised that a new Health Bill would be introduced during tha session, and requested oomment6 and suggestions on the proposals. The following suggestions wore made for inclusion in the Bill: (1) .That the principle of one house one drain be enforced; \2) that the local inspector be given power of inspection under the "Sale of Food's and Drugs Act." Tho action of the gas works manager in charging extra for cartage of coal to Koro Koro was approved. The engineer' reported that the extra lamps for Koro Koro were being made, and would be erected shortly. ■
Mr. George Jones asked for permission to alter a former church building in Jack-BOn-strcKjt to make two shops and dwellings, a. lock-up shop and one dwelling. Mr. Jones was informed that before tho matter could bo considered be muet submit plans and also got the permission of the' Board of Trade. At a later .hour Mr. Jones submitted a plan. After this had been viewed by councillors, tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) read the bylaw on the subject, wEich he stated preoluded Mr. Jones carrying out his proposals. It was decided to refer the plans back to the applicant with a request that he comply with tho bylaw LOWER HUTT The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt liorough Council was held last evening. Present: Mayor (Mr. E. P. Rishworth), Councillors A. J. West. W. B. Hardy W. Cotton, A. Macaskill, W. Knight, W. Moldrum. Apologies were- received from Councillors Hobbs and Mitchell. Tho District Health Officer wrote advising that a number of dwellings off the Hutt-road and Wakefield-street are unfit.' for occupation, and advising what repairß are necessary. Councillor West stateS that as an application for a rehearing of the case, whioh fixed the value at £850 for each of the houses in Wakefield-street, had, been made, he moved that a. copy of the Health Officer's report be forwarded to Mr. Barley. It wa« decided to forward the copy. F. Gr. Read wrote making a further application for permission, to keep his billiard room open fill 11 p.m. Councillor Macaakill said the- saloon was well conducteel, and he did not see anything against extending the closing hour. Tho Mayor pointed out that the bylaw pro^ vided for 10 o'clock closing. Councillor Cotton gave; notice to move at next meeting that the bylaw be suspended, and the application granted. K. Marshall wrote submitting an amended offer for Mason's, Gardens. Councillor Macaskill moved that a reply bo sent that the council cannot entertain the offer. This was carried. It was decided to ask the Petono Council to give the gas pressure agreed upon between 4.30 and 7 p.m., as at prese-nt there is a good deal of discomfort oaused through consumers not being able to'uss the cookers.
