BOYS' INSTITUTE

TEPID BATHS,

A meeting of the Management Committee of the Boys' Institute was held last evening, Mr. G. A. Troup, president, in the chair. The meeting was called for the purpose of considering the matter of a subsidy from the City Council toward the tepid baths. The Chairman expressed pleasure at the presence at the meeting of Councillors Norwood, Burns, Hutchinson, and Dale. The committee courted publicity in the work of the Institute, and it was its desire that the public should have some idea of the magnitude of the work being carried on there on behalf of the boys. An evidence of the growth was shown by the large number of classes now operating. Subscriptions had increased from £500 in 1915 to £3400 in 1919. There were no highlysalaried officials, and a good deal oi the work was done voluntarily. The baths were a public necessity, and the committee appreciated the fact that the City Council had voted £100 for this year, but they felt that the amount should be at least £200 in view of the fact that the bath was open to the public at all time* at a lower charge than was mad© for municipal baths in other parts of the Dominion. The cost of running this was only £540 last year, compared with £1400 for a similar bath in Dunedin and £1000 in Christchurch. If the subsidy were increased, the bath ( would be open all the year round.

Councillor xvorwood said that the City Council was 'uite in sympathy with the \vork of the Institute, and, speaking for the other councillors who were present he said that he had been greatly impressed by what they had.seen of the work that was being done,-and also with the figures that had been submitted by the chairman.
