TEACHERS' SUPERANNUATION

CBY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

OHKISTCHUBCH, 26th July

The Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister of Education) was interviewed by Professor Gabatt, chairman of the Professorial Board of Canterbury College, as a deputation representing the professors and highez'-salaried public school teachers, on the subject of the maximum pension of £300 per annum at present payable under the teachers' superannuation scheme. It was pointed out that the amount paid by the higher-salaried contributors to the fund' would give a better return if paid into a private insurance company. It was asked that the £300 per annum limit be eliminated and the pension be paid on a general basis. The Minister replied that thia matter had already engaged his attention, and that of Cabinet. Ho recognised at once that there v.-as force in "the views placed before kirn, •but one difficulty was that any alteration of the maximum pension would have to apply, not only to the teachers' superannuation fund, but also to the Public Service Superannuation Fund. Reports were being* obtained from the Public Service Commissioner and frqm the Government Actuary, and these when completed would be placed before Cabinet and a final decision arrived at. Mr. Parr added that lie thought there would be little or no opposition to an amendment of the Teachers' Superannuation Fund conditions in the direction desired, because only comoaratively few would be affected, and this would not seriously prejudice the fund.
