MASTEBTON, Thia Day. An ex-inmate of the Burnham School was before the Court to-day on several charges of house entry and theft. A considerable area of land, in the Masterton district is being prepared for the spring sowing of wheat. The new postal and telegraphic charges, which are to come into operation on Ist August, cs,u£ed considerable comment in. business circles in Masterton to-day. _ It is generally conceded that they will have a serious effect upon small businesses.

The Minister of Education, who visits Masterton on Saturday next, will be deputationised in regard" to the high school and other matters.

Stock in the Wairarapa has wintered remarkably well, owing to the "mildness of the season. A record in the lambing and in the wool clip is expected.

CAETERTON, This Day. A meeting of the executive appointed by the recent conference at Greytown to urge the Government to push on with the Bimutaka deviation was held at Greytown on Saturday. The meeting was addressed by Messrs. A. D. M'Leod and W. H. Field, M.P.'s. It was decided _to arrange for a representative deputation to visit Wellington on the. matter. A further motion was carried, expressing regret that the question of the route should be raised by any individual, as the recent conference had decided that it would leave the question.of route to experts.

It is understood that the tender of Messrs. Miller and Everett, of Masterton, has been accepted for the erection of ths new school at Martinborough.
