EASTBOURNE BOROUGH COUNCIL
. The Eastbourne Borough Council met last night, there being present: The Mayor (Mr. F. H. Mather), and Councillors Bainl Bennett, Fisher, Gayles, Green, Marquis, Pilcher, and Shortt.
The council placed on record its regret at the.illness of Mr. C. Russell, a former member of the council, and the town clerk was instructed to write him a* letter of sympathy, conveying a hope for hi 3 speedy recovery.
As the council has been carrying on the Sanitary service at a loss for some years, it was resolved to endeavour to have the controlling Act amended to enable a large rate to be struck. :
The Post and Telegraph Department stated in. 4' letter that they were not prepared to extend the telephone service to midnight, unlss there was paid £100 per annum.- It was resolved to place the whole matter before Mr. G. Mitchell, M.P.. and to ask his assistance in attaining the borough's desires.
A report granting an increase of 10s per week to the masters, engineers, and crews of the ferry steamers, was ado-pted.
It was decided to instruct th/council's architect ■ (Mr. W. M. Page) to report upon alterations necessary for the establishing: of a picture show in the Eastbourne Hall.
