IMMIGRATION CAMPAIGN TO BB

OPENED,

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.) (Received May 28, 3 p.m.)

LONDON, 27th May.

Mr. W. A. Watt (Federal Treasurer) was entertained at luncheon in the pity at. the Carlton Club. He explained Australia's finances. Australian repatriation was the most li'«ra.l in the Empire, and. probably in.tho world. The Australians, having voluntarily served in the war, deserved the best the nation could give them. He . proposed a meeting of city.men to discuss the consolidation of the war debts of the Empire. Australia had not lost her equanimity over the war debt. She had the proud bt»;ef that her 'resources, with additional population, easily would carry the load. Australia badly wanted immigrants, provided they. we^e her own kith and kin; the natural increase was insufficient, and the Government proposed to initiate an immigration campaign within a few months. British hoardings would be splashed with announcements for the purpose of getting the overspill of men and women willing to stake their fortunes in a new country. He. realised the gravity of the Eastern situation.
