OLD BUILDINGS
THEIR DEMOLITION. The Public Health Committee recommended to the City Council last evening the demolition of certain buildings in Taranaki-streefc, Haining-street, Kiddi-ford-street, Hugh-street, . and Cubastreet. In reply to Councillor Forsyth, the Chairman of the Committee (Councillor R. A. Wright) said that the recommendation for demolition would be carried out. The Mayor said that, in accordance with views expressed at the last meeting of the council, representations Were made that if certain repairs were carried out. the buildings, would be allowed to remain a little longer than otherwise, so that people who could not get accommodation elsewhere might have this shelter, inferior as it was. Councillor M'Kenzie : "What are you going to.do with the Chinese?" A Councillor : "They will only occupy someone else's premises." The Mayor remarked that the council could only carry out the requirements of the Health Department. The committee also recommended that notices be served on the owners of other properties requiring that structural alterations be carried out. The recommendations were adopted.
