LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL
The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough was held last evening. Prusetit : Mr. E. P. Rishworth (Mayor), and Councillors Willoughby Knight, 'W. Meldrum, W. B. Hardy, A. J. West, and A. J. Hobbs. . ■
The Public Works Department " requested,, information a& to the council';! approval or otherwise of the plans of the Waiwet-u Bridge iv the. Hall-Jones Settlement. The engineer I'eparted that he had come to a satisfactory arrangement with the Department' in regard en the site, and, in consequence, the council agreed to approve the plans. Mr. F. JenneEs's contract for attending, to, the Post Office dock was renewed for a further period of twelve months. ■The District Health Officer urged the council to take steps to have the necessary structural alterations carried out to premises in Railway-avenuE. The Mayor moved that the'opinion of the Borough 'Solicitor^—which was to the effect that if the council carried out the work it might not be in a position to recover the cost from the owner—be forwarded to the Department and the Department be informed that the council could not nee' its way to press the matter. Permission was refused to the Wellington Rugby Union to take up a collection on the Recreation ■ Ground each Saturday during the football season (except on "the- six Saturdays when a charge 'for admission is made) in aid of the Hutt Football Club's Gymnasiun: fund.
A request from the Hutt Valley Hockey Club for permission to use the new portion of the Recreation Ground during the hockey season was regretfully refused, as it was considered that the granting of the request .would interfere with the carrying out of a comprehensive scheme of improvement. The engineer was authorised to carry out a plan as soon as possible. The Te Momi Land Company requested the council to take steps to clear tho Te Momi Estate streets of weeds. The matter was referred to the engineer. It was decided to hold over" an application for an extension of the gas main in Knights-road until conditions were more favourable.
A ■complaint received from a ratepayer regarding an alleged -nuisance^ on a neighbouring property was reported upon by the Borough Inspector, who recommended that the Health Department be advised to inspect the premises. The Town Clerk stated 'that this.course had been cidripted.*Mr. E. J-.i Hill complained- tha-t motorcars standing near his property were injuring his i'evice. It wai? decided to inform Mr. Hill that contemplated improvements to the road would probably remedy the matter.
No. 2 Committee reported that it had met to consider a statement by the Librarian "that the present method of purchasing books is very unsatisfactory." and now made the following recommendations to the council, viz. :—(1) That the present arrangement for the purchase of library books be'discontinued. (2) That Messrs. Patterson and Rowe (two subscribers) be asked to act as joint selectors, and to submit for the council's approval suggestions as to the manner their duties should be* carried ' out-, and that in the event of these gentlemen declining to act the council nominate others suitable for the duties of selectors. The recommendations were adopted.
