POTATO EMBARGO
REPRESENTATIONS TO THE PRIME MINISTER. (II TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, 21st May. A deputation from the Potato-Growers' Association waited on the Prime Minister with a request that steps be taken to have the Australian embargo lifted on the importation of New Zealand potatoes. It Was pointed out that the crop was good and practically free from disease. There was a surplus, and all the'growers wanted was a fair price. The market value of £3 10s to £4 per ton did not leave a profit. ■ ■ Mr. Massey said it was impossible to avoid loss at £3 10s. There had been several communications, unsuccessfully so far, with Australia, although it had been urged that the New Zealand crop was very free from disease, and a thorough inspection, was suggested. The present quarantine conditions mader importation to Australia impossible, but he .would try again, for it was as important to Australia as to New Zealand, and if nothing could be done he was prepared to "try Honolulu, San Fr&ncigciy, and even Vancouver. He belived there was a market there. He would instruct the Department to ascertain if they could be placed there at a reasonable rate of freight. ■ .' .
