Dr. W. H. Johnston (Wellington) who Kit at Edinburgh University for his F.R.C.S., has gone to London as surgical specialist on the Medical Appeal Board. Mr. Ernest Gillon, -Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Railway Department, who accompanied the Prince 1 of Wales during his New Zealand tour, was presented by His Royal Highness at Christchurch yesterday with a solid silver cigarette case in recognition of the excellenco of the train Arrangements made and carried out by the Department. Mr. Gillon will return to Wellington tomorrow. ■. . ■ "Sir James Allen," writes "F.W.M." in the London Daily Mail, "comes to London with the reputation of being a great administrator, and the office of High Commissioner will afford him full scope for his abilities in that direction." The writer describes Sir James as a "true son of Empire," whoso Cabinet appointment as Minister of Defence was a. very fitting post for a politician who had proved himself an efficient member of the Dominion's Defence Force. "His rank of colonel is by no means an honorary one. That he does not rank higher is no fault of his. No New Zealander was keener to join the Expeditionary Force than Sir James Alien, but his colleagues in the Government held that as Minister of Defence he was -perform, ing. an even greater duty for the Empire." ■ .
