A claim for compensation for the loss of a thumb while he was working on the Government drainage works on the Hauraki Plains was made by George Lindsay in the Arbitration Court at Auckland last week. After hearing the •evidence the Judge commented on the fact that action for compensation was delayed for more than a year. He said that had the plaintiff established to the satisfaction of the Court his allegation that he was lulled 'to a sense of security by the statements of the Government officers the Court would have upheld the plea of reasonable ground for delay. But he had entirely failed to establish it even in his own evidence, and the action must fail. No costs were allowed, in view of the double circumstance that the claim was ogaiiwt the Government and that the' plaintiff had been already put to considerable expense.
