BROKEN WINDOWS

CHINESE SHOPS DAMAGED IN.

/TIMABU,

(BY TBU!GK.iPH.—PRHES ASSOCfATIOy.)

TIMABU, 18th. April.

Several letters have appeared recently in the Jooal papers protesting against custom being given to Chinese fruiterers, and on Saturday night, under cover of darkness, due to the electric street lights being cut off, a small crowd damaged four Chinese shops, in somo case 3 breaking the plafe-glass windows. No arrests were made. In. the darkness it was impossible to Bee where the missiles (fruit and vegetables* from the shops) were thrown from.

The streets have been unlit for several nights, owing to both#t.he gas producer and steam plants going, wrong at the same time. Only a. little power and some domestic .light are available from a small combined steam engine and dynamo. It is hoped the big steam engine will be ■working again to-night.
