DUNEDIN; This Day. A deputation from the High Schools Board of Governors asked the Minister for Education to-day for greater elasticity in tho regulation regarding finance, in order to enable them to meet unexpected changes in the staffing of the school. The Otago Boys' High School this year had au unexpected decrease ■in attendance, with the result that it had one more teacher than it was entitled to, and consequently found difficulty in paying the salaries. There was a deficiency of £572. The Minister said there was room for greater freedom of action on the part of a board which,' through' no fault of its own, was in trouble regarding capitation. He would look into the matter, but could not undertako to make any provision on the Estimates for what was required in the case mentioned. v

■ The fourth annual report of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association records a period of phenomenal growth. The membership is now 6000, as against! 2680 at the date.of the last annual meeting.

The telephone circuit between Blenheim and Nelson has been completed.

Theory examinations under the Associated Board, R.A.M. and R.C.M., Lon-. don, will be held in Wellington on 31st May. Entries close on Ist May.
