SOLDIERS ON THE LAND
AN INSTANCE OF SUCCESS.
The Hon. D. Guthrie (Minister,of Lands), in referring to the success "of soldier settlers, stated to-day that he had recently received information with, respect to the returns secured by a soldier farmer which demonstrated what could be done by industry and the application ot practical knowledge. ' '
The soldier concerned holds a farm a 120 acres of agricultural land that'is'no of first-class quality, and his gross re turns for this year from his oat crop which he converted into chaff, were no less than £2200. This was more than the capital value of his holding. It was conceded that the ruling prices for produce are high ; but eveiiiwhen that factor was considered, the result could only i be' achieved by an industrious man workinihis section on sound lines. The soldk' referred to was now in the fortuna< position of being able either to practi, ally free his section from encumbrance or to improve it very considerably an. ensure comfortable conditions for himse' and family for the future. His outlool was a good one, and the Minister said h. brought the case under public notice hoping that it would be an. encourage ' ment to soldier settlers' generally to emulate this man's achievement. A point that was also worthy of notice was the fact that, this soldier bad had" the advantage of the advice ; of the district)' supervisor of soldier settlements, who is a practical agriculturist.
(< "I am satisfied," stated Mr. Guthrie, "that the appointment of these superVisors will prove of inestimable value in our soldier-settlement scheme."
