A SETTLEMENT
BOILERMAKERS' DISPUTE THE NEW CONDITIONS. The settlement of the boilermakers' dispute was made known by the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. W. Newton)' yesterday afternoon. The attitude of the union's assessors in asking for an additional one penny on the wages previously agreed to was chiefly responsible for a prolonged discussion on the previous day. The main clauses in the new agreo. ment are as follow : — ] Hours of labour:—(a) Forty-four ftours shall constitute a week's work, of whicu eight .hours shaE be worked on five days of the week and four hours on Saturday, (b) The hours of starting and ceasing work shall be mutually arranged in each establishment between the hours of 7.0(/ a.m. and 5 p.m. on five days of the week, and 7.30 a.m. and noon on Saturday, with a break of not more than one hour for lunch. Wages: —(a) AH boilermakers shall be paid not le6s than 2s per hour with a present bonus of 3d per hour. (It was agreed by the union assessors that no claim for increased bonus would be made within six months.) (b) All wages to be paid weekly, and not later than Friday in each week, pay out to commence within ten minutes of knock-off time, (c) Boilermakers working with acetone gas on any day or portion ot a day shall receive Is per day extra, (d) Where a worker is dismissed or leaves of his own accord all wages shall be paid within twenty-four hours. Holidays:—(a) for work done on Sunday, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anniversary Day, Labour Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day double time' shall be paid, (b) Where country branches of this society are established, the People's .local Show Day occurring in such ,- districts shall be deemed to be a holiday granted tothese branches in lieu of one of the above holidays, (c) That notice of all special holidays other than Bbatutory holidays be posted up in a conspicuous place on the employers' premises as soon as possible. For "dirty" work Is 6d is to be paid ii» lieu of Is, and regarding heat the temperature is set down at 110 degrees Fah. in lieu of 120 degree*. Overtime.—Overtime to be paid at the rate of time and a half for the first three hours and thereafter double time up to the time of commencing work next morning if worked continuously. Apprentices.—The rates in the existing award to be increased by 5s for each year. (The present award provides for 17s 6d per week during the first year to £2 5s for the year of completion of apprenticeshii/. Scope of. award. —Award to operate throughout the Wellington industrial district.
Term of'award.—Award to come into force on 2nd April, 1920, and to continue in operation for a period of two years.
