STARS AND THE SUN

FROM KELBURN OBSERVATORY.

Monday evening was highly favourable for the observation of the heavens, and a most instructive time was spent at <3io Kelburn Observatory by the . visitors under the direction of Dr. C. E. Adams, Government Astronomer. Jupiter and Saturn were well placed for observation, and, good views of the satellites and Saturn's rings were obtained. Mars was rather late in rising, but will be in a good position in another month. Other objects well seen were the Great Nebula- in Orion, the large cluster Omega Centauri, the jewel cluster in the Southern Cross, the multiple, star Signia Orionis and the double star Alpha Centauri, which is one of our nearest, neighbours among the fixed stars. Yesterday afternoon a fine view was obtained of tho magnificent group of sunspots which is at present crossing the sun's face. It has been suggested that these sunspots were the cause of th© fine aurora seen on Monday night and Tuesday morning. The Observatory will be open again on Tuesday, 13th April.
