SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
SEMI-FINAL MATCHES BEGUN The semi-finnl series of matches in the senior cricket championship commenced on Saturday, Petone v. East and North v. Old Boys, on the Basin Reserve. Another senior match took place at Hutt, Thorndon v. Hutt, but both teams are out of the running for the championship. If Bast win the match with Petone, they will win the championship; otherwise the winners of the two matches commenced ok Saturday will play off for the final early in April. Petone made a good start against East, running up a creditable score of 239. Finlayson wi?s the top-scorer with 70, which included nine 4's and a 6 Smyrk and Nicholls, 47 and 39 respectively, played solid cricket, and the total would have been considerably greater if the tail had not gone down to Hutchings, who took two wickets with successive balls, closing the innings. His average was five for 58. East went in about 5 p.m., and by the time stumps were drawn at 6 o'clock had lost four of their best wickets for 33 runs, including Baker, Dind, and Hutchings. Hind was the only batsman to reach double figures. Condliffe and Schraeder are still hatting. North elected to bat in their game with Old Boys, and succeeded in putting up the moderate total of 156. to which C. G. Wilson and Wagstaffe contributed the principal scores. Wilson gave a bright, vigorous display, and his 43 included six 4's and a 6. Wapsta.ffe out of 48 hit eight 4's. 'fucker , 14. and Ryan 10 were the only-other batsmen to read) double figures. The bowling was evenly divided m the honours, five bowlers taking wickets, Knowles-Smith having the best average with tlute for 16. and Barclay next with three far. 38. Old Boys made an excellent start in their innings, and by the time play closed for the day had made 74 runs without loss. Lambert and Birch were the batsmen, and were both well established, with 58 and 34 respectively not out, when stumps were drawn
The friendly game between Thorndon and Hutt at the Hutt Recreation Ground was productive of fairly in Investing cricket. Thorndon went in- first, and with ten men made 166 (Moore 35, and Martin, not out, 46). . Judd with four for 55 had the best bowling average. Hutt made a poor show with the bat, and had lost six wickets for 43, when stumps were drawn. Warne took two wickets for 19, and Plant three for 18. following are the details:— PETONE AND EAST.
