STAFF PICNICS

On Friday the employees of Messrs. Bryant and May, Bell, and Co., were entertained by the firm at a picnic held at Moonshine Valley. They were taken to the ground .by motor-buses. The weather was of the best, and a-n enjoyable day was spent by all. During the afternoon the following events wt.e decided, with results stated : Ladies' race (onen), 50yds, Miss D. "Skipping competition, Miss Harris 1, Miss Winters 2. Boys' boxing (blindfold), W. T3-nie. .Married ladies' race (50yds). Mrs. Barton 1, Mrs. Wilson 2. Cigarette race, A. M'Kinley 1, M. Smith 2. 8.M.8. handicap " (100 yds), Miss D. Jones 1, Miss Marsh 2. Consolation race, 'Miss Walters' 1 1, Miss B. Hare 2. Prize for most points, Miss D. Jones. The sports'were conducted throughout by a. small committee, Messrs. Humphreys, Mason,\and Miss Fulton being especially prominent. At. the conclusion the prizes were presented by Mrs. M'Lav.

In ideal weather the employees of Messrs. L. T. Watkuis, Ltd., held their seventh annual, picnic at Maidstone Park on Saturday last. The success of the gathering was contributed to by the untiring efforts of Mr.. P. D. Davis, the custodian of the park. The following were the .successful contestants in the various, events :—Apprentices' Handicap : F. Nelson 1, A. Wilson 2, N. Patching 3. Ladies' Handicap : Miss Anderson 1, Miss Le Comte 2. Jellyeating Competition : Miss M. Smith and Mr. IVakeliu 1. Whistling Race : Miss M. Anderson and N. Patching 1.. Ladies' Nail-driving : Mrs. Morris 1, Miss Anderson 2. Men's Championship Handicap : H. Kent, 1, N. Patching 2, k. Allan 3. Married Men's Handicap : H. Kent 1, A. Allan 2. Girls' Race : Miss Winter 1, Miss Watkins 2. Miss Elkington 3. Tug-of-War : Compositors beat all-comers. Messrs. Pleasant, Patching, Kent, and Nelson defeated a team representing Messrs. Gordon and Gotch in a 440 yards relny race after an exciting contest. Mrs. Watkins presented the prizes to the successful competitors at the conclusion of the sports. ■
