FIREMAN'S DEATH
THE CORONER'S VERDICT.
. An inquest was held by Mr. W. 6. Riddel], 5.M.,. this morning, regarding the death, of James Monaghan, a ship's fireman, 33 years of age, at the Public Hospital at 1.45 a.m. on Thursday. Monaghan was arrested by Constables Henry and Park in Lower Tory-street on Wednesday night on a charge of drunkenness. .At about 10.45 p.m. the master of the Monowai called at the Taranakistreet Police Station to hail the man out, but Monaghen was then so ill that medical assistance was sought. On the following morning deceased's name was called in Court, but Sub-Inspector Emerson stated that the. man was too ill to appear and asked that a week's remand ■ should be made.
Dr. Edwin Park, house surgeon at tho Hospital, said that Monaghan was insensible when admitted to the Hospital at 12.40 a.m., and died while attempts were being made to rouse him, Death, in his opinion, was due to diabetic-coma.
Dr. Kington Fyife, who had made a post-mortem examination of the'body, agreed that death was probably due to diabetic coma, though su-ch a condition would not be evident as regards a postmortem examination.
The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
