SHUNTING ACCIDENT

MABTON, This Day. A. E. Basley, a railway shunter, sustained two fractures of the right leg, ■while hia left leg was badly lacerated. He was attempting to couple two trucks, when he wa3 knooked down. The injured man was motored through to the Wanganui Hospital, where he died this morning. Mr Basley, who was 28 years of age, was a returned soldier. He belonged to the Hawera district.
Th« possession of a desert island amid the iselation of ocean waves may still appeal to medern town, dwellers vexed with the worries of "civilised" life. Apparently (sa.ys the Melbourne Age) ther* are islands off the coast of Western Australia which are crying out for inhabitants to remove their deposits "of guano and other fertilising substances." These islands are known as Ashmore Islands, and the British Secretary, of State for the Colonies is seeking tenders for a. liceai*e ts remove such deposits from the islands.
There are at present five cases of diphtheria, under treatment at the Mastefkig Hospital
