Hon. D. H. Guthrie (Minister of Lands) returned to Wellington from the Urewera Country to-day.-

Mr. E. P. Yaldwyn, manager in New Zealand for the Commercial Bank of Australia, left Wellington -for Eotorua and Taupo to-day.

Mr. Edgar Home, M.P., Guilford Division, Surrey, will be the chief guest and speaker at a luncheon of the New Zealand Club on Tuesday next.

Mr. W. W. Gibson, acting-chairman of the Wellington Coal Trade Committee, left for Christchurch. last night on official business. He expects to return to Wellington to-morrow.

Colonel R, H. Potter, C.M.G., officer commanding the Auckland military district, formerly commandant at Trentham, and Lieutenant-Colonel J. E.*Duigan, chief staff officer, are at present in Wellington.

Mr. James C. Montgomery, of Liverpool, England, who has been an officer in the White Star Line for several years, arrived in New Zealand by the Wahine. He has joined the Union Company's service, and is now fourth engineer of the Wahine.

Mr. J. Manning, who has been promoted to the position of bailiS at the Wellington Magistrate's Court, in place of Mr. D. Alabaster, was recently presented with a silver tea service by members of the bar, solicitors practising at Palmerston North, where he had acted as bailiff for the last thirty years.

Mr. Reginald E. Gillon (son of Mr. Ernest E. Gillon, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Railway Department, and a grandson of the late Mr. E. T. GiUon, for many years editor of The Post) was this morning, on the motion of Mr. H. F. Yon Haast, in whose office he served his ' articles, admitted a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand.

The following members were selected at the annual meeting of the Empire Press Union to act as New Zealand delegates at the conference to be held in Canada :—Messrs. P Selig (Christchurch Press), T. W. Leys {Auckland Star), E. A. Jones (Southland News), W. J. Perm (Taranaki Herald], J. Hutchison (Otago Daily Times), J. Parker (Wellington Post), H. Horton (New Zealand Herald).

Sir William Herries (Minister for Native Affairs) left by the midday express for Rotorua to-day. He will attend the Kotorua A. and P Association's Show, and, in conjunction with the Hon. Dr. M. Pomare, C.M.G.. (member of the Executive representing the Native race) and the Hon. A. T. Ngata (Eastern Maori), will make arrangements for the Maori welcome to be extended to the Prince of Wales.

Mr. C. H. Holmes has, reports the! Christchurcb. Press, been admitted as a partner in the legal firm of Messrs. Meares and Williams. The firm will in future be carried on under the 6tyle of Messrs. Meares, Williams, and Holmes. Mr. Holmes, who is a son of Mr. A. H. Holmes, Registrar of the Supreme Court, Christchurch, had a lengthy spell of service with the New Zealand Division on the Western front, and gained the Military Cross for gallantry in the field.

Mr. E. G. Stapp, assistant posimaater at Wellington, has been appointed chief postmaster at Nelson, in succession to Mr. H. D. G-rocott, who has been promoted to the position of chief postmaster at Christchurch, vice Mr. E. Northcroft, retired on superannuation. Mr. J. C. M'Crea, postmaster at Hastings, is to become assistant postmaster at Wellington. Mr. J. E. Broadfoot, post, master, Feilding, has been appointed relieving chief postmaster for the Scuti Island, and Mr. W. T. Coad, postiras-ter, Stratford, will succeed Mr. J. C. liale, chief postmaster at Westport, uho retires.
