SUPREME COURT JUDGES

AND THEIE SALARIES.

(»I TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL TO THE FOST.I

AUCKLAND, This Day

,;> Several matters affecting Supreme Court Judges were mentioned at the annual meeting of the Auckland Law Society yesterday. The new president (Mr. A. P Richmond) said it might be possible for the society to' consider the position of the most eminent members of the legal profession, ' the Supreme Court Judges, though possibly they might consider it an impertinence for the society to do so. He felt, however, that the time had come when the Judges should be put in a better position. Their salaries were very much less than those of Australian Judges, and their duties were much more onerous. They were not so well paid as high officials in the Railway Department, or as, say, insurance j company managers. There had been no increase in their salaries to meet the advanced cost of living, and h was not right to expect men of the stamp _of judges to carry on for salaries which were not commensurate with the duties they had to perform. Another factor was the congestion of work at the Auckland Supreme Court. The time had come for the appointment of a Judge who would be entirely resident in Auckland, and who would not be willed upon *» go on circuit work to Hamilton and elsewhere. There was some general discussion of the question of Supreme Court fixtures, and the need for an improvement in the methods of setting cases down for hearing. ___„_______
