SWIMMING

NORMAN ROSS TO TOUR NORTH

ISLAND.

Many Wellington people will learn with pleasure that Norman Ross, the American champion swimmer, will probably visit this city. The Christchurch Sun states that owing to the marine engineers' strike in Australia, the \26sel in which Ross was to return lias bean delayed. It is therefore anticipated that he will be able to cross to Wellington and complete a short tour of the North Island, finally catching his boat at Auckland. The Australian association is .agreeable to this course, and the council of the Now Zealand Amateur Swimming 1 Association is now awaiting the consent of tho champion before moving further. If arrangements can bn made for Ross to come to Now Zealand, it is anticipated that ho will arrive in Wellington about Ist March. About 16 days would bo spent in the Dominion, and probably carnivals could be arranged in Wellington, Palmerston North, _ Napier, Hamilton, and Auckland. Tho time at the .champion's disposal would possibly preclude a. visit to Wangunui or his coming to Canterbury. However, a, visit, even if limited to the one island, would <lo an iinmenso amount of good to the sport. Ross has new methods, and during his Australian tour lias shown liiirsclf willing to impart instruction whenevor possible. Apart altogether from the stimulus to swimming which the visit of the champion would be sure to create, tho educational benefits would be passed on.
