SATURDAY'S MATCHES

HEAVY SCORING AT PETONE Perfect weather and a fast wicket were the conditions' for cricket on Satur.day afternoon in the new series of games opened .in the club championships. It was a batsman's day, and- the scoring was moderate on the Basin Reserve, but heavy at Petoue. The matches on the Basin were East v. Old Boys, and North v. Thorndon, while at Petone the local team met then- near neighbours from JJie Hutt. Bast made a fair showing against Old Boys, aggregating, for the innings 205, to which Hutchings 51 and Schrader (not out) 55 contributed the best individual scores. Old Boys replied with 66 for two wickets, with Lambert still batting at 41 not out. Tucker cams out with the best bowling average of five wickets for 37. Thorndon were outplayed by Ncrtii. Going in first they made only 165 for their innings, AVarne 69 and Prince 21 being the only prominent scorars. Wilson took four wickets for 33. .North retaliated' vigorously with 210 for five wickets, C. G-. Wilson 58, Middleton 36, Paterson 44, and Patrick and Robinson still not out 21 and 25 respectively. The two suburban teams came out of tha day's play at Petone with very different records. Batting first, Hutt, with one man short, went down quicldy to the bowling of FinJayson and Siriyrk. Hughee 27. and Glennie, not out, 26, ■ were the only double-figure men in an innings of 91. Finlayson had a day out, and captured six wickets for 49. Oato was in fine form behind the stumps, being responsible for' three wickets, two stumped and one caught. Petone- made better use ,of the fast wicket, a,md, before stumps were drawn, had made 354 for r seven wickets. Gedye in has individual inimitable style made .132, one of his best performances this seasan. Smyrk with a hard-hit 93 was his chief partner, the association of the pair realising 176 rums.
