Sir Joseph Ward left for the South last night.

Constable C. L. Le Fevre has been appointed Clerk of the Magistrate's Court, Upper Hutt.

Mr. G. B. Purdue, examiner at the local Post Office Savings Bank, is retiring shortly from the service.

An old identity of Mastertoß, Mr. Samuel Wickenden, died on Thursday, at the age of seventy-nine years.

Mr. J. G-. L. Hewitt, S.M., of Marton, left by the Moeraki on Thursday, en route for the Old Country.

Mr. W. R. McLaren has retired from the service of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, after being for thirty years in charge at Timaru.

Dr. Truby King, who recently returned from a visit to England, has resumed thb duties of his position as medical superintendent of the Seacliff Mental Hospital.

Mr. D. C. Bates, Government Meteorologist, who 'has been in Europe, attending the Meteorological Conference, is a passenger on the Port Pirie, which is due at Auckland on Sunday or Monday.

Archbishop Redwood will leave for San Francisco, on his way to England and the Continent, on Monday. He will be accompanied by the Rev. Father Maillard, parish priest of Levin.

The Registrar of the Supreme Court, Duhedin (Mr. E. P. Ward) has been appointed to make an official visit of inspection of the different Courts throughout the Dominion. He will commence his duties within the next few weeks.

Chaplain-Captain R. W. Edneades, who was one of those men elected by the Baptist Missionary Society in India to servo as chaplain in Mesopotamia, is returning to New Zealand by th« Bremen. Prior to leaving for India Mr. Edneades served his "apprenticeship with Messrs. S. Luke and Sons.

Mi\ F. D. Thomson, private secretary to the Prime Minister, was entertained by his fellow secretaries yesterday, and congratulated on his admission to the Companionship of St. Michael and St. George, a decoration that has never before been conferred on a secretary to any Minister.

Cabled advice has been received at the office of His Majesty's Trade Commissioner, that Mr. BY W. Dalton, who has been paying an official visit to the United Kingdom, was to sail on his return journey to New Zealand on 3rd January by R.M.S. Mantua, and "should arrive in Wellington towards the end of February. '

Dr. Mackin, of Wellington, will leave about the 29th January on an extended tour occupying about twelve months. He, proceeds to Sydney, and there joins the Houtman for Java. After visiting Signapore, Siam, Japan, and China, Dr. Mackin will go to England, via Canada. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Mackin. During his absence, Dr. George Milroy Wish, a graduate of Glasgow, will act as locum tenens.

Major W. B. Kirkwood, secretary of tho Transport Board during the war, is proceeding to the United Kingdom by the Mahana, on duty in connection with the adjustment of transport matters with the Admiralty. He is being accompanied by Mrs. Kirkwood. During the past week Major Kirkwood was presented by his associates in the Defence Department with a silver-mounted flask as a token of the high esteem in which he is held.
