THE MOTOR FATALITY ATTARA-

TAHI WEST.

fIT TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL 10 THE POST.)

MASTERTON, This Day. A distressing accident occurred at Taratahi West on Friday last, in which Mrs. Louisa Hay, aged 45 years, the wife of Mr. James B. Hay, mill engineer, of Carterton, received fatal injuries. Mr. Hay was returning from Mount Holdsworth in a two-seater De Dion car, accompanied by his wife and six-year-old daughter, when the car strack a culvert near the edge of the bank. The driver endeavoured to right the machine, when it ran into a bank, twisting one of the front wheels. The car ran along the side of the bank for about twenty-four yards before it was pulled up. Mr. Hay then noticed that his wife was not by his side, and, looking back, found her lying face downwards on the road.. <■

Mr. Every, one of a picnic party, who was motoring some distance ahead, noticed the accident, and immediately returned and rendered assistance. He found Mrs. Hay in an unconscious condition, and drove her into Carterton, where she was attended to by Dr. Johnston. It was found that the unfortunate woman had sustained concussion of the brain, a fractured collai'-bone, and two broken ribs. She lingered in an unconscious condition until 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon, when she expired. An inquest was held yesterday, before .Mr. :H. M. B. Trapp, J.P., actingCoroner, and a verdict was returned that deceased met her death in a motor accident, no blame being attachable to the driver.
