FOUND IN THE HARBOUR

N.Z. ALLIANCE CIRCULARS.

A Postal official named Joseph Murphy was called before Mr. P. L. Hollings, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court to-day to answer a serious charge of having lost a postal packet given into his charge for delivery on the Oriental Bay round on 10th uist. The evidence for the prosecution was that the package, consisting of 71 envelopes, containing circulars and leaflets, issued by tho N.Z. Allianco, and addressed to householders, had boon, or should have been, sorted into Murphy's box on 9th inst., for delivery next morning, and was found floating in the boat harbour on 13th inst. by Thomas Roys, a custodian at the Parliamentary Buildings. The finder sent the packet to the Rev. Mr. Gray, the Dominion organiser for the Alliance, and the latter reported the matter to tho Chief Postmaster, who instituted tho prosecution.

The Magistrate remarked that the action was a oriminal prosecution, and as tho evidence did not fully prove that the bundle had been placed in the accused's box or bag by the sorters there was a doubt about the matter, and. such being the ease, he would dismiss tho information.

Mr. H. F. O'Leaiy appeared for the defence.
