OFFICIALS
EVIDENCE AT THE INQUIRY

The evidence given before the Commission bo far has chiefly centred round the use by the officials, against /whom the charges are made, of two codes, Government and private, for their communications. Mr. Evans (late Government Secretary) gave evidence tliat the private code was used to prevent any leakage of
information.
Ma. Carey (late Director of the Territory! explaining certain correspondence, declared that Dr. Gilruth was interested in the Daley mine, he having guaranteed half of any loss to Judge Bevan. He also gave evidence lth.it he had negotiated with Vesteys for employing Dr. Gilruth on a. scientific mission.
■fudge Bevan in his evidence said that Di Gilruth became interested in the D&ley mine about September, 1916, when witness told him that owing to the heavy liabilities he could not go on with it. Dr. Gilruth agreed to take half of Sevan's share. The Minister controlling the Territory was not informed of the maftter. He claimed that all their actions were perfectly honest and straightforward. Mr. Justice Ewing announced that he could see no justification for 'the statement that Judge Bevan was interested in Daley River land, and he therefore proposed to strike his name out of that charge.
(The charges against Judge Bevan, Mr. Carey, and Dr. Gilruth, are thaA they were all interested in a mine on the Daley River, of which a lease was granted by Gilruth, and that theJnnd at the Daley River was demand«l(ifor Bevan and Gilruth, who are the real owners; thart they shook the confidence of tho people of the Territory to such an extent as to cause -the recent trouble. Gilnith and Carey are also charged with being prepared to eive improper consid«ration to the firm of Ve&'teys, to enable them to sell their meat works to the Government.]
